Good web design doesn't just end when the page is pretty, there is a lot of work put into the backend to code the page so you can see it in it's glory in your browser. SEO (search engine optimization) plays an important role in how the page is coded. How can this help you? By teaching you what a good coded page is you can possibly spot problems in your own site.
What is SEO and How it Helps
SEO stands for search engine optimization, it is the on-going process of developing or optimizing a site to help it reach higher rankings in the search engine. By obtaining higher rankings, your site can recieve more traffice more leads coming in off your site and we all know leads can convert into new business.
Built-In SEO
To start us off, it is good to start at the top. Here you will find what are called "meta tags". There are three here you should pay attention to the most. They are the "title", "description" and "keyword" tags. They are shortly followed by either the actual title of the page, description of the page or keywords used. Make sure at the very leaste each of these are present and have an actual title, keywords and description filled in. Typically there is an order for these to follow but with some modern CMS (content management software) these can come out of order.
In SEO, the top tags are an important part of what we develop. Without these being present your SEO efforts are probably going to be lackluster at best. Make sure those tags are in place!
Body
Next, let's have a look at the body of the page. Ideally we want content of the page to be pushed up as high as possible for the search engines to find. Since search engines do not spend much time indexing a page we need to make sure that content is coded to be as high on the page as possible. If you can, make sure the left and right colomns if present are coded after the main body content. This can be quite diffecult to do and some CMS can control this for you.
